April Meeting Announcement
"Motivation by Recognition"
Presented by Todd P. Wilmore
Tuesday, April 22, 2003

What do the following workplace behaviors have in common?
People give advice when it hasn't been asked for.
People are overly judgmental or use putdowns
People give indirect, evasive answers to questions
Bullying, bribing, threatening, aggressiveness.

They are all potential signs that an organization has a self-esteem problem, more specifically a recognition problem. According to Abraham Maslow, one of the highest-level motivators is self-esteem. People with healthy self-esteem are confident in their ability to deal with challenges and change. They respect themselves and others. Self-esteem is about self-image and it plays a major role in our professional success and social relationships. So how does that fit in with recognition? A planned, well-balanced recognition strategy builds and supports the self-esteem of an organization's employees. Recognizing individual talent, ability, achievement, and contributions, helps build and maintain healthy individual self-esteem. Ultimately, it can build a healthy organizational self-image that leads to profits, productivity, and success. If we follow ten basic recognition principles, we can help people and companies learn to feel good about themselves.

Todd P. Wilmore has served as a project manager, human resource consultant, senior training analyst, facilitator, and trainer to government agencies, private industry, and non-profit organizations for over 25 years. Meeting Topics
We would like to hear from you regarding possible topics or speakers of interest. The Board works hard for you to keep the topics current and providing information that is a return on your investment.

Should you have any requests/ideas for meeting topics, feel free to contact any of the board members or through the web site!

Message from the Chair

To my fellow ASQ members:

I sincerely apologize for the lack of communication you have been receiving from the board recently. It is entirely my fault. I have not placed an emphasis on getting information out to you on what we the board has been doing the past few months and the things we have planned. As in your world, the short-term priorities have taken over things recently…

Let me at least let you know what we have planned for April and May. Our next meeting is Tuesday, April 22nd at Carmela’s and our topic is Recognition programs. Todd Whitmore is our speaker and he has spent 25 years dealing with this issue. It should be an interesting topic.

Also, during that meeting we will be having elections for the next fiscal year. Our slate of candidates is as follows:

* Chair: ‘Gabbo’ Galbreath, our current vice-chair.
* Vice-Chair: Cliff Blackwood, our current secretary.
* Secretary: Ken Powell, a first time board member, but an active participant in the section.
* Treasurer: Ann Hannan has agreed to stay another term as Treasurer.

If you have other nominations or want to participate in other activities, please contact me at your earliest convenience.

On Wednesday, May 21, we will have Scott Carson, a recruiter from SCR-Executive Search who will talk about the trends in the Quality market and bring you up to speed on what businesses are looking for in recruiting Quality professionals.

We will have more details shortly. Again, lack of communication is not an excuse for a full plate of work. We hope to see you at our next two meetings.

Scott
