Message from the Chair
Happy February! We had a great meeting with J. P. Russell last month, discussing new ideas on quality auditing. Of particular interest, given the changes in the ISO 900x standards, was the emphasis on a more proactive approach to auditing; getting away from the strict auditing by checklist and using the concepts of "managing by walking around" to keep audits fresh and less intimidating to others.

This month you are in for a treat and yes I am a bit biased. Pam Pringle, a fellow faculty member at CNU, is coming to talk to us about teams. This will not be your ordinary "team basics" presentation. Pam will be talking about getting the team out of the rut that teams sometimes get into. She will talk about those things you can do to keep teams going forward. This will be an interactive session where YOU will be placed in a team and given situations to respond to. Hey, along with a Chinese buffet, it should be a great mid-winter break from your routine.

Lastly, I want to talk about our scholarship that we offer. Each year we offer a scholarship, named after the section's founder, Tom Clark, to a worthy local student that has some college experience. Last year we gave out $1000 to Donna Valdez, a CNU government studies student. Most of you know a college student. From experience, college textbooks are not cheap—my stat book is over $100. To a worthy college student, this scholarship money does come in handy and it offers us exposure in the local community. Very soon we will be putting up the application on the web site. I developed an announcement for the scholarship that if you email me, I will gladly send it to you. We usually don’t have many applications. I would like to ask all our members that if you know of a college student, ask them to apply.

We have some good meetings coming up for the rest of the year PLUS we need board members. Elections will be held at the March meeting. Hope to see you at the Golden Palace on the 20th!

Scott Rutherford, Chair

ASQ Benefits of Membership
ASQ Sections

ASQ's 247 sections provide members with their local link to the Society and their local link to quality. While activities vary from section to sections, most sections host regular dinner meetings, publish newsletters, sponsor educational programs (including certification prep courses), and hold conferences and seminars. Section affiliation also provides members with great opportunities to network with fellow quality professionals in the community.

Each Section has a slate of officers and an executive committee to provide direction and leadership and ensure that the section is meeting the needs of its members. Many Sections also provide outreach to their local community; they are involved with local businesses, schools, government agencies, and health care facilities, promoting quality concepts and tools.

DO YOU NEED TO ESTABLISH A QUALITY LIBRARY?
At your request, we have put a list together to help libraries build a comprehensive collection of quality resource materials for a university or organizational setting. They will give users a reference in the essential areas quality touches. ASQ's own librarians, members, and staff often reference these materials. This resource area was developed to help both professionals familiar with and new to quality. Please visit this new area at http://www.asq.org/asqwire/111301qpresslibrary.html
