Hampton Road Section 1114

Message from the Chair
Folks, I want to provide you a recap of the activities the section has done over the past year. From a membership perspective, we maintained our level of membership throughout the year. That is unusual in that most other sections in the country lost members. The section also participated in two INCOSE events: their Metrics Symposium in October and their Software symposium in May.

We had a successful training program year. The education program generated revenue of $12,750 from onsite training programs at Canon, Ford, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and our joint CQT/CQE certification review course with the Tidewater section. These training sessions contributed to the large number of people that signed up for certification exams this year.

Over the past year we had some exciting dinner programs highlighted by J. P. Russell's visit and talk on auditing in January and a visit from Clay Hodges, our Regional Director. Below is a listing by month of the meetings:

September
Everything you always wanted to know about ASQ… Clay Hodges
November
Six Sigma programs at NNS & Gateway… Paul Blessner and Fran Kjeldsen
January
An Evening with J. P. Russell
February
Helping Teams Produce Quality Results… Pam Pringle
March
The Changing Arena of Computer Environment Quality…Thom Byrne
April
An Overview of ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Standards…Tom Welch
May
Plant Tour – Johnson Controls…Scott Bonney

From an administrative perspective, the executive board conducted a member preference survey in conjunction with the SMP program, started the review and update process of our bylaws and began analysis on increasing the community impact of the section's scholarship program.

The success and hard work has not gone unnoticed. This year our section was awarded the Regional Director Excellence Award in appreciation for the contributions the executive board made to ASQ and your service to your members and to your community.

This year has passed very quickly. The new executive board is forming and we will be kicking things off shortly. We want to hear from you. What are you interested in from your section? What topics should we talk about? What should your volunteer representatives do for you? Drop me an email anytime.

ASQ Six Sigma Forum— ASQ's Newest Member Type
The ASQ Six Sigma Forum is a new member type from ASQ.

This online membership was created by a design team of practicing Six Sigma professionals in order to provide members with a well-rounded Six Sigma experience. Membership in the Six Sigma Forum is separate from ASQ membership and is free for the first membership year. The ASQ Six Sigma Forum was launched in May 2001 and there are currently over 9,000 members at all levels of experience. This indicates increased interest in and importance of Six Sigma in the workplace.

RAB Offers Special Benefits to CQAs
If you're an ASQ-certified quality auditor interested in expanding your credentials, be sure to take advantage of special benefits available only to CQAs under an agreement between the Registrar Accreditation Board and ASQ's Quality Audit Division.

Since the inception of RAB's quality management system (QMS) certification program, CQAs have been eligible to take a 16-hour auditor-training course, rather than a longer, more costly 36-hour course.

"The RAB-QAD alliance greatly benefits CQAs who also choose to pursue RAB auditor certification," said Cindy Miller, director of RAB's auditor certification programs. "The agreement translates into real savings of both time and money." Additional benefits for CQAs include a 20% discount on the initial application fee for RAB auditor certification, a 10% discount on annual and recertification fees, and ongoing credit for meeting its maintenance requirement for continuing professional development (CPD).

"We recognize that the professional development requirement for a CQA satisfies the CPD requirements of RAB's programs. Rather than having the auditor submit the same information for both credentials, RAB will accept current CQA status as evidence that the requirement has been met," Miller said.

RAB requires its certified QMS auditors to complete at least 45 hours and QMS internal auditors a minimum of 24 hours of CPD during the three-year certification period. In addition to the CPD requirement, auditors must continue to provide verifiable audit experience and meet all other RAB renewal and recertification requirements. RAB offers QMS certification for lead auditors, auditors, provisional auditors, and internal auditors. For more information, visit www.rabnet.com, where you can download application packages for any RAB certification program free of charge.
