Johnson Controls is a global market leader in automotive systems and facility management and control. In the automotive market, it is a major supplier of seating and interior systems, and batteries. For nonresidential facilities, Johnson Controls provides building control systems and services, energy management and integrated facility management. Johnson Controls (NYSE: JCI), founded in 1885, has headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Its sales for fiscal 2001 totaled $18.4 billion.

About JCI Chesapeake JIT:
Johnson Controls' Chesapeake JIT is a true just-in-time, just-in-sequence seating assembly plant, supplying Ford Norfolk Assembly Plant with an average of 1700 seat sets and 1000 headliners per day. Product is manufactured on two ten-hour shifts with 70 production personnel per shift. Inventory both in and out is extremely lean, with product going directly from manufacture to the backs of the trucks that will carry them to the customer. Average time between product being ordered and that same product driving off the end of the Ford assembly line is about six hours. Just a few of the quality and improvement systems in place include extensive poke-yokes, 100% torque control and tracking, downtime tracking, kaizens, and six sigma. Among its many awards, JCI Chesapeake submitted the winning project for Ford Motor Company's World Excellence Award for Supplier-Led Six Sigma in 2001.

Message from the Chair
I want to take this time to introduce to you the people who will graciously give their time to support you, the section membership, from July 1 through June 30 next year.

My vice chair is Gabbo Galbreath. Gabbo brings a wealth of knowledge from Naptheon. He has been active in SME and INCOSE and with his current position in software quality; ASQ is a natural for him. I will be leaning on Gabbo more so this year as he moves from being the newsletter editor.

The new treasurer is Ann Hannan from Schaevitz, Inc. You have seen Ann at a number of meetings; always-asking great probing questions with that British lilt of hers. With that razor-sharp wit, I know Ann will be able to keep the section's finances squared away.

Cliff Blackwood returns as our secretary. Cliff, working in quality at NNS, did an absolutely fabulous job of minding the details of the section business. I am very fortunate for his return, knowing Cliff will be there to remind of what I plumb forgot.

Alan Campbell, who is the outgoing Treasurer, moves to the very important position of Membership Chair. Alan, the Quality Manager over at Catalina Cylinders in Hampton, has been an ASQ member for quite some time. He did fabulous work in acting as THE ASQ person at INCOSE's Metrics Seminar last October. I am really pleased at the ideas Alan is already talking about to help members for the upcoming year.

Dave Belanger, vice-chair this year, is moving to be newsletter editor. Dave is a very busy Quality Manager at NNS. Not only with his duties there, he is also a member of the ISO 9000 TAG committee. Dave does a lot of traveling, not only for NNS, but also for the TAG. I am very pleased that Dave is helping us out with the newsletter.

Two gentlemen who have key roles in the running of the section are NNS veterans Dayton Ward and George Archer. These two gentlemen have forgotten more about quality than I ever will know. Dayton runs the examining committee and the recertification process. George handles the proctoring of the certification exams. I cannot say enough about George and Dayton. They make smooth what invariably could be a rough process.

Two other returning members are Barry Zorumski and Aston Tsang. Barry has been with the section also for a while. Barry will continue to chair our Audit committee and help with the Section Management Process. Aston is a relative newcomer to the section but he has dived in and organized what was a chaotic web site. He maintains his position as section Webmaster.

A person I hate to say goodbye to is Ginger Zarske of Canon. She has served the organization as long as I have been here (yeah, only 2 years ....) but Ginger has been a great sounding board for me as well as an excellent past vice-chair and maintainer of the section databases. All those emails with newsletters, local happenings, etc., Ginger makes sure they go out. To take her place I am very pleased to welcome Jean Trolley from Zeltech. Jean, from what Alan tells me, is fantastic. Jean, by herself, put together INCOSE's Metrics Symposium book together. With all that talent, we will "get her feet wet" in maintaining the good work Ginger has started.

Another very important loss is Joyce Jenkins, also of Canon. The last two years Joyce has been the point of contact for all the dinner meetings and activities. She also made all the arrangements for the room and the meal. She is moving on to bigger and better things and we will miss her.

Which brings me to two very important positions to fill. We need someone who can take Joyce's place and soon! September comes very quickly and we spend the summer mapping out and getting ready for the upcoming year. This is a good entry position for anyone who wants to be involved.

Another position crucial to us as members is the Education Chair. Since Keith Jordan left last December, we have no one to fill this position. The Education Chair sets the schedule, finds the instructors and minds the arrangements of this program. A crucial member benefit goes unfilled as we search for someone willing to take the position. Education IS the biggest revenue generator for the section. While this position is vacant, the section will not have certificate review courses.

Well, that's all for now. Don't forget the last meeting before summer, May 30th "tailgater" and plant tour at Johnson Controls. We will be getting a tour of a facility and a new winner in Ford's Six Sigma project competition. Should be a good time. Wear your ASQ colors proudly. Who knows, they may get you a break on the price.
