September Meeting Announcement
Wednesday, September 18, 2002
"Lean Sigma"

The September meeting promises to be most interesting. It will include a guest speaker on the efforts associated with "Lean Sigma" at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Our guest speaker will be Doug Smith who is currently head of the Nuclear Process Improvement Division at the Norfolk Navy Shipyard (NNSY) in Portsmouth, VA. Doug has almost 25 years experience in a variety of positions with the Nuclear Navy. With NNSY, Doug has been a leader in the Quality and Process Improvement initiatives, most recently in the development and fielding of the Shipyard's Quality Performance System (QPS), NNSY's quality metric system.

In his current role as division head Doug has led the development of "Lean Sigma"- the marriage of lean manufacturing concepts with the Six Sigma philosophy. Doug is also a good friend of the Hampton Roads section; he has worked to involve ASQ in the professional development of his auditors and engineers.

So come out and soak up all you can on this topic. You can meet the new Section Board as well at this, our first meeting of the 2002/2003 term.

Message from the Chair
Happy September! For those with school-age kids, it's that time for getting back into homework prep and updating the wardrobe. Though you haven't heard much from us, we have not been idle either and we have some programs coming that we think you will enjoy.

First some changes. We will no longer be mailing out newsletters. The time and expense is counterproductive and given the number of returned newsletters because of bad addresses, it is a drain on our budget. The newsletter will always be posted up on our website and our emails will include that link to the latest newsletter.

To announce our meetings, we will be mailing out reminder postcards. Besides being cost-effective, it is a better reminder of the monthly meetings. Our website address will also be included on the postcard.

This year we are not conducting any certificate review courses. We do have instructors but no one to coordinate this program. The section will start this program again once we get a person to fill the position.

Our September dinner meeting will talk about an interesting marriage of lean manufacturing and six sigma improvement tools. We are enticing you a great Italian buffet from Carmela's near the Coliseum Mall for our meeting on September 18. See you at 6!

October is Design of Experiments month. Ted Karr is a principal at Compass Training & Consulting and has over 20 years experience working with Fortune 500 companies in the nuclear, transportation, and, consumer products fields. Over the past 10 years Ted has consulted worldwide to assist companies with statistical applications and product and process improvements. With Ted’s expertise and the multimedia and computer facilities at CNU, 18 lucky people will get a 2-day course on DOE. The course will cost $325, which includes a text; a very good text I might add. The course will be held all day, Monday and Tuesday, October 14 & 15. To sign up, send an email to sruther@excite.com. We will control membership so that ALL companies are best represented.

That’s all for now. Have to go beat the bushes for speakers in the upcoming months. If you have any suggestions, don’t hesitate to contact us!

The ASQ Code of Ethics
